Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh killed in Tehran

Hamas says its political leader Ismail Haniyeh has been assassinated in Tehran after attending the inauguration of Iran’s new president.

Few details have emerged and there’s been no claim of responsibility yet, but condemnation has been swift.

His death comes just hours after Israel says it killed Hezbollah’s most senior military commander, Fouad Shukur, in retaliation, it says, for the attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in which 12 Druze children died.

Analysts suggest the risk of a wider conflict is now higher than it has ever been.
