Sri Lankan international cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been charged after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Detectives arrested Gunathilaka on Sunday morning over the alleged sexual assault of a 29-year-old woman in Rose Bay earlier this week.

They arrested Gunathilaka in a hotel on Sussex Street, Sydney, shortly before 1am after Sri Lanka had been defeated in their last T20 World Cup game against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Sri Lankan team were preparing to leave for the airport a few hours later, to catch a 6am flight home.

Police allege Gunathilaka, 31, and the woman were communicating for a number of days after making contact via an online dating app on Sunday. They met for a date during the week before going back to the woman’s home in Rose Bay.

Police will allege in court that Gunathilaka then sexually assaulted the woman multiple times over the course of several hours.

Gunathilaka was taken to Sydney City Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. He was refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Monday.

NSW Police Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty said the woman took a lot of steps to ensure her safety, including communicating with the man for several days before meeting and going for a date in a public place.

“It was just unfortunate. It has nothing to do with meeting on a dating app or anything,” she said.

Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup team played their final match in the tournament in Sydney on Saturday night. Gunathilaka, who has played almost 100 T20 and one-day internationals and eight Tests for Sri Lanka, was not an active member of Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad due to a hamstring injury suffered three weeks ago. He stayed with the squad.
