Worldwide there are some 7,500 different varieties of apples, ranging in colour from red to gold to yellow to green and they vary in size too. They can be as small as a cherry or can be as big as this. Some apples are juicy, some sweet some tangy…there’s so much of a variety in taste. Apples are available pretty much all year round. Apples can be eaten just as a fruit or as different products like apple juice, apple wine, apple jam etc. So many options there. In English there’s a famous phrase, “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. The literal meaning of it is that if you eat an apple everyday you won’t need to go to the doctor for any illness. Well, in reality this can’t always happen, but the apple does have a lot of benefits. What are they? Watch ahead.

Each single apple is a small storehouse of important nutrients. An apple contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, and E. All of this in just one apple. Apples also have about 85 percent of water content. All of this is very much needed for our body’s well-being. Apples help in controlling blood sugar and also for managing a person’s body weight to help remain fit. How? It’s because when you eat an apple, it slows down your digestion process. This allows you to feel full longer and you don’t feel hungry often. Eating apples can also reduce the risk of heart problems keeping our heart healthy. Apples also have dual benefits. One is for those people with constipation problems, apples helps them relieve stools and secondly, it even helps those who are suffering from diarrhoea. Having an apple will stop loose motions. Recent studies have also shown that having apples is good for our brain. With old age, many people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease that causes memory loss, but it was found that people who consumed more of apples and apple products in their diet showed better brain efficiency than those who were on a regular diet. Apples do have a lot of benefits, but it’s important to know how to eat, how to store and when to eat it. Watch ahead.

For the greatest benefits, when you’re eating an apple, eat the whole fruit — both skin and flesh. Don’t discard the peel. Eating it along with the peel works better for your body. You shouldn’t just gulp it down but rather it is important to chew it well. How to store apples? Do you know that even apples breathe? How? They absorb oxygen from the air and exhale carbon dioxide as well as water. Therefore, the warmer the environment, the sooner they dehydrate and shrivel. Hence, it is best to store them in the refrigerator if the weather is too hot or if it’s not placed in the fridge, you can keep them out individually wrapped in paper. This way they will last longer. When should you eat apples? It is better not to eat cold apples; let them sit at room temperature for a while after you’ve taken them out from the fridge. You should eat apples only when they are ripe. Since apples have so many benefits and they are also easily available, start eating them for good health.
