Fashion lighting doesn’t need to be complicated to be striking or high fashion. Furthermore, one light doesn’t mean they are ‘boring’ either. In fact, many of the lighting setups on the covers of the biggest fashion magazines are achieved with a single light.

I’d like to share 3 of my favorite fashion (full length) setups that you can achieve with a single light, and here’s what’s great about it– they all look totally different. They have completely different vibes and could be used for a commercial catalog, dramatic portrait, or fashion editorial.

Even better, my setup uses simple modifiers! Take a large umbrella with diffusion and some v-flats, and that’s all you need! Simple can be better and in fact, some of the most timeless, memorable images in fashion photography have simple lighting!

  1. I wonder if they going to come out with entry-level mirrorless by end of the year? Love the tips on photography. Many thanks to Lindsay, Gavin, Daniel, and others.

  2. Very useful video , I learned lot from it, looking forward more videos like this keep it up good work, R.manohar , india, chennai

  3. The biggest temptation to click on a single light video is a single light. Nobody, literally nobody has the space for flats or flags :/

  4. Thank you Lindsay for my first intro into studio photography 🙂
I have also the question of Nikol Kara, how much Watts lights do i need for the shoot like in the video?

  5. Can you recommend cheaper lights. I’m just a student I don’t have that cash flow lol please and thanks.

  6. Hi, Lindsay! I can see that in the second setup the strobe that you used is a profoto 1000w. My question is how much power do we need for a shot like this? 300,600,1000w? How much power would be enough in a small studio?

  7. First time encountering tutorials from you in the Adorama channel, but will be sure to check out more of your content. Thanks for this video!

  8. Lindsay, your videos are a highlight on Youtube because you are such a great communicator. You manage to explain, in the briefest time, all the important points of the shoot being discussed. There is never any wasted time in your videos! I hope you never run out of ideas for new videos because I’ll always be watching – Thanks 😊

  9. beautiful results and easy setups, but I am not too sure why you wanted to keep the modifier on for your 2nd setup, it's huge and blocked out your bounced back light.

  10. Another great video. Quick, concise, and packed with usable information. Thank you so much! Can't wait to try this.

  11. Fantastic video Ms. Lindsay Adler! Thanks for sharing so much through these videos in ADORAMA. Yes, sometimes one light source its all is needed and by you showing us three completely different looks magnifies that idea.

  12. I'd love to know the power settings and also camera settings when shooting these shots. I am pretty sure its a standard setting for much of these, but im more interested in the power coming from the stobe lights.

  13. Just a very quick question if i may. If you don't know what the models are going to wear for a shoot, what backdrop/colour etc would you pick? Ta!
