  1. I am very eager to try a fourth option, independent drive to all four wheels, or single front and dual rear. The first is the Rivian electric utes and SUVs that are coming, with an independent motor for each wheel. The second is the Tesla Cybertruck, which in one configuration has two motors for the rear and a single at the front (probably with excellent brake type traction control to stop spinning) and 400mm of ground clearance. Coupled with huge power and torque, I suspect that these will be amazing off-road. Only disadvantage I can see is that they are American sized, so the high country is going to be a challenge. Fortunately, the Cybertruck is 3mm stainless steel skin, so dents and scratches should be minimal.

    I love wheeling my Prado around, but having an EV for a daily driver makes is feel pretty agricultural!

  2. Jocko, great presentation mate love your work. My preference are the Arb air lockers my Isuzu has both front and rear, the rear comes on a-lot but the front only when my seat starts to get sticky haha.

  3. In terms of mods, I'd like to see a DIY dual battery setup. I'm working on one now, and it would be nice to see your thoughts on it.

  5. Lockers I prefer in order:
    1) Factory installed selectable lockers
    2) ARB Air lockers

    I don't currently own a vehicle with a locker. My 2009 VW GTI had a automatic e-locker from the factory. I removed it and installed a Peloquin Torque Biasing LSD (works like a Quaiffe)

  6. I would argue not having lockers teaches you to be a better driver as most simply switch the lockers on before even thinking about line choice

  7. Rear Locker ARB is what i fited first on my JKU. 2 reasons 1 offroading…the other is Snow roads here in Austria when its just not needed for 4wd but you dont want to one leg spin off of every light

  8. I own a hilux and I have traction control from factory.

    So I have installed an autolokka in the front and it seems to get me everywhere I go. With the rear open diff, the traction control acts as a rear locker and its great. But it is intermittent and can become problematic in some situation.

    For my driving style it suits me best but will soon opt for an e-locker front and rear. This will probably be the cheapest way to go (being an auto-elec) labour cost installation wont be in the equation.

  9. twin air a must especially if you do most of your driving solo as i do. do 1 and save for the other as quick as possible and keep tracking

  11. If I have a factory rear e-locker would it make sense to get a e-locker in the front to. Even tho air is stronger? I also do not have a permanent air compressor

  12. Steering… A front locker only affects steering on a high traction surface. Mine can be switched independently as Jocko’s can. On a low traction surface where there is a lot of wheel slip, a front locker helps. Point the front wheels where you want to go and locked front wheels pull where they’re pointing. Rear locked can only push straight and with both engaged, rear can sometimes oppose the front in corners. Front locked, rear unlocked in a turn on low traction surface allows the open rear differential action to assist the front around a corner. Ultimately, being able to independently select front or rear or both is the best arrangement for driver selectable lockers.

  13. Live axle front and rear, rear air locker first. IFS with open diffs, rear locker first. Any vehicle with a strong rear LSD (and honestly, this is only Patrols), front locker first. My Ol’ Jackaroo had a strong rear LSD, so it got a front air locker. My current MQ Triton (GLX poverty pack) had no lockers. It got a rear first, then a front. Twin air (or “e”) lockers always ultimate. The early “Pony” videos with twin auto lockers and shit small road tyres, proved how dramatic an improvement lockers make. Really enjoying the way you present the tech stuff Jocko.

  14. This is physics 101.
    A front locker will always do better up hill than a rear as it is pulling you rather than pushing you into the hill. IE. Push wheelbarrow up steep hill…V pulling a wheelbarrow up a steep hill. The problem and reason why automotive manufacturers will not risk front lockers is simply this. If you steer while locked it does not work. Also you will like damage the front drive train.

  15. big boulder crawling situations, like the one in this video, a front locker is better, as evidence showed. Reason being, it is hard to push the front end up a rock vertically when applying forward movement from the rear. But front lockers can climb the rock vertically by itself. Take the same wheelbarrow analogy, try pushing it up stairs, it's gonna be a lot harder than pulling it up stairs. but anything that doesn't quite involve big vertical climbs, rear lockers are better.

  16. its funny i have a rc crawler trx4 landrover defender and it has lockable diffs standard off one switch and the switch is set up to lock the front first then both

  17. I have a GU4 and have a front air locker and with the tight LSD in the rear I have that’s all I need for my rig. I wheel in the Vic High country a lot and having the flexibility of being able to lock the front diff works for me and my rig. If I was driving an IFS vehicle I would go with a front locker as the front wheels tend to spend a lot of time in air. If I have an 80 series then I would probably go a rear locker if you had 2 live axles and Toyota’s aren’t know for having a great LSD. As they said it depends on what sort of vehicle you have and what is going to work best for you, and one locker is better than no lockers so no matter if you go front or rear it’s going to be a win and get you further.

  18. Rear locker as one it was factory but I agree u push a wheel barrow not pull and I feel with a ifs vehicle if your pulling on your front cvs u bind them up and have chances of braking them
