MG has revealed a dual-motor flagship version of its all-electric Mulan hatchback, known elsewhere as the MG 4, in China with hot hatch-rivalling performance.
Dubbed the Triumph Edition, it’s unclear if this dual-motor version of the MG 4 will be offered in Australia.
As recently reported, the single-motor version of the MG 4 hatch is due here in the first half of 2023.
We’ve reached out to MG Motor Australia to see if there’s any possibility for the dual-motor MG 4 to launch locally and will update this story once we hear back.
This flagship version of the MG 4 is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup producing 330kW of power and 600Nm of torque.
The dual-motor MG 4 also has similar outputs as the Smart #1 Brabus Performance Edition which also has a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup, but produces 315kW and 543Nm.
MG claims the dual-motor version of the MG 4 can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds. This is on par with the Mercedes-AMG A45 S, Audi RS3, and Smart #1 Brabus, and puts it between the Tesla Model 3 Long Range (4.4 seconds) and Performance (3.3 seconds).
This dual-motor all-wheel drive electric powertrain is mated to the same 64kWh ternary lithium battery pack as the top-of-the-range single-motor MG 4.
MG claims the dual-motor MG 4 has an electric range of 460km according to more lenient CLTC testing. For reference, the single-motor version with the same battery pack has a claimed CLTC range of 520km.
The dual-motor MG 4 receives torque vectoring, orange “high-performance” brake calipers, and 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels wrapped in 235/45 R18 Bridgestone tyres.
On the inside the flagship dual-motor MG 4 also receives Alcantara sports seats with six-way electric adjustment and two-way lumbar support, and an Alcantara steering wheel.
MG’s commercial director in the UK, Guy Pigounakis, recently told Auto Express that it’s looking at launching the dual-motor version of the MG 4 in early 2023, indicating it’ll be offered in right-hand drive.
“We’re bringing out a high-performance version of MG 4 in about six months,” said Mr Pigounakis.
“It gives us the option of erring on the side of comfort with the standard car because of the very high-performance, twin-motor derivative.”
It’s unclear if the UK version of the dual-motor MG 4 will use the Triumph Edition name, or if it’ll wear the X-Power name which is currently used on a limited-edition version of the plug-in hybrid MG 6 in China.
“I’d like to see the brand transitioning more towards a sporty image,” added Mr Pigounakis.
“We have very sensible cars today. That’s about to change into sensible and fun cars.”
Pricing for the dual-motor version of the MG 4 hasn’t been revealed yet in China or the UK, but the single-motor variant kicks off at £25,995 ($A44,104) in the UK.
