WA Decides 2025: Premier Roger Cook wins state election despite major swing against Labor in several seats

Labor has secured election victory in Western Australia, confirming another term for the incumbent premier, Roger Cook.

Sky News Chief Election Analyst Tom Connell called the election victory for Labor at about 7.45pm local time (10.45pm AEDT).

As the vote count continues, the Liberals and Nationals will be certain to grow in their opposition after holding just six seats prior to the election.

With a majority secured, Mr Cook’s government will push ahead with its agenda, including investment in renewable energy, infrastructure and cost-of-living support.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton will closely watch the results for federal implications with the upcoming election expected to be held in May.

Mr Dutton will take some hope from the state’s election results as the Liberals secured double-digit swings in suburban and regional seats.

The Liberal Party suffered heavy losses in Perth’s suburbs in the 2022 federal election, and he will be looking for a shift back to the Coalition.

With his parliamentary majority at risk, Mr Albanese has skipped the possibility of an April election for a May contest following delays caused by ex-tropical cyclone Alfred.
