One of Australia’s biggest banks has sparked uproar online after encouraging customers to scan a QR code to find out trading hours instead of using simple signage.
A sign outside an ANZ branch directed customers to scan the QR code for “opening hours and branch information”.
Adding to the confusion, the webpage generated by the code only points users to a generic page showing the different locations of ANZ banks, forcing Australians to take extra steps to find out opening times.
The decision has sparked concern for customers whose first language is not English, as well as elderly customers who are not tech-savvy.
An ANZ customer from Burwood in Sydney’s inner west told news.com.au she was queuing outside the branch for 15 minutes due to confusion about the opening times.
She said not clearly showing the opening and closing times was “unprofessional”, given some people don’t speak English as their first language and older Australians may not know what QR codes are.
“Just put it out there so we know. It’s annoying, why not just go back to the basics. I was looking around in there for the open times and couldn’t find it,” she said.
Frustrated customers online also voiced their concerns, with many arguing that opening hours should be clearly displayed out the front.
“Whatever happened to having a simple sign detailing opening hours? Now have to scan a QR code and look up the branch on a website,” one Reddit user said.
“I’m siding with Boomers on this one, what the f**k?”, another disgruntled person said.
“I bet someone thought it’s a good idea to make the opening hours information digital so they can change them any time,” a third user added.
Others pointed out elderly people were the most likely to visit the bank but were also the least adept to technology.
One commenter sarcastically said: “Great for elderly folk, you know the ones that actually go inside banks the most.”
Others backed the idea in part, with one user suggesting it was okay but only “in addition to other methods”.
An ANZ spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au the QR codes were designed to provide the most up-to-date information on trading hours.
“From time to time we may change our branch opening hours, as we wish to ensure our staff can be available when they’re needed most – helping customers achieve their financial goals, whether it’s owning a home, growing a business, or managing their everyday banking needs,” the spokesperson said.
“We understand the importance of accessibility and our branch staff are here to help all members of our community to access the services they need.”
