Why America voted for Donald Trump (again) | Anywhere but Washington

America has elected Donald Trump for a second time following a convincing victory over Kamala Harris. In the final instalment of Anywhere but Washington, Oliver Laughland and Tom Silverstone travel to Michigan to watch the final days of the race; as fervent Trump supporters hit the streets, young women mobilise behind Harris, and chaos and despair drive rival election night parties.

  1. I don't think people overseas realize how incredibly undereducated and gullible Americans are. They are also very susceptible to celebrity status and make no mistake, Donald Trump would not have the following he has if he was just some random politician who showed up in the Republican party. Also, people here are very misogynistic and it's more pervasive and accepted than racism.

  2. He won because that’s the result of belittling half the country. You want to constantly insult our intelligence, patronize, condescend, demonize us as if we only vote for him because he’s a racist, misogynist, neonazi — you people are so out of touch with the reality for ordinary working Americans. This is the consequence of your demonization of half the population. We the people eventually stand up. Thank goodness he’s back. Can’t wait for the next 4 years.

  3. In a way, I hope that things get so bad that these simpleminded voters swing back to Democrat in 2028. I cannot imagine that things get so great that they elect yet another Republican. That is, if we even have any other elections 🙁

  4. As a young man and someone who escaped the 1ncel rabbithole, I'm not upset that Kamala lost to Trump.

I'm upset that more Americans would rather have some ultra-wealthy billionaire who has absolutely no respect for the law or his opponents and his surrounding environment as a president, than one of the most qualified w̶o̶m̶e̶n̶ people in the current US government cabinet. I'm upset that Americans don't understand the economics and how the reason why we're paying more for groceries is because of the tariffs Trump implemented in his first term. I'm upset that more Americans would rather drive their gas guzzling Ford F-250s and spend a fortune on gas anyway, than care about their community and putting effort into sustainable practices such as more jobs based off. I'm upset that more Americans only care about themselves and look for the shortest and easiest answers, rather than think about the big picture and long-term implications a second Trump presidency will cause. I'm upset that more Americans would rather a person who has inherited his father's fortune and has always lived a carefree life as a president, than a highly experienced politician who has experience in all three branches of government. I'm upset that people automatically think conservatives will automatically lower the prices of food, when many conservative politicians want to completely get rid of food stamps. I'm upset that people automatically think conservatives will automatically lower the prices of college and housing, when conservative politicians want to get rid of student loan forgiveness and make it harder for people to get a down payment. I'm upset that people in my country are against paid parental leave and universal healthcare because they think that is "punishing hard work and rewarding laziness", and therefore socialism.

I'm upset because if all of this is not indicative of the downfall of American society, I don't know what is. The downfall of the USA is 100% on the American people!

  5. nobody believes your lies the most wealthy people in this country actually voted for Harris and the workers are those who voted for Trump nobody believes you. I am black but I support Trump and will continue to support him

  6. Britain jails people for social media posts, while freeing rapists.
We Americans don't care what you think.
Everyone who loved freedom in the UK moved out centuries ago. Nothing but slaves left.

  7. i've been a full-time independent political consultant and political journalist since 2010. My Voting Bloc of 3,500 is galvanized to replace Establishment Democrats with True Progressives AND create a viable 3rd party that truly stands with the middle class, the working class, and the poor.d

  8. The masses see him as the TV celebrity, the big macho, "you're fired" guy, and they lap it up. Little do they know that they will all pay so dearly for the trump choice, buckle up ya"ll, here comes Putin two, now you'll learn what corruption really means.
