The ‘glaring loophole’ allowing imports of sanctioned Russian oil products to Australia

New data shared with SBS shows Australia’s dealings with oil refineries that use crude oil originating from Russia. The Australian government says it’s an import issue it is reviewing.

In the first six months of 2024, Australia reportedly imported more than 1.4 million tonnes of refined oil products from at least three refineries that use Russian crude.

As of July 2024, there are currently more than 21,000 sanctions in total imposed by the US, the EU, Australia and other countries on Russian entities, individuals and products, including oil.

According to analysts, a legal loophole allows sanctioning countries to import products refined from Russian crude oil in third countries.

Lera Shvets from SBS Russian explains.
