More than 200 people have died in historic floods which Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has described as the worst natural disaster in the country’s recent history.

Thousands of troops and police officers were drafted to help with clean-up and searches. Anger rose among residents who felt abandoned by the government and King Felipe and Queen Letizia were heckled when they visited one of the worst-affected areas.

  2. Let us compare this with the Rhine. At its mouth, the average flow of the Rhine is about 2,330 m³/s. The Rhine's catchment area covers 198,000 km². The latest available data from 29 October, explains the Spanish Hydrographic Confederation, is from 18:55, when the flow reached 2,282 cubic metres per second (m3/s). After that hour, the sensors were destroyed by the water. The flow reached exceeded 3,200 m3/s. The river bed in that area is normally dry, without water. The destruction did not reach the capital (Valencia) because it was protected by important river diversion works; the new protective channel in Valencia worked very well and exceeded 2,000 m3/s.

  3. Wow, this video really highlights the impact of nature in such a profound way. It’s hard to believe how quickly things can change. However, I can’t help but think that the authorities could have done more to mitigate the damage. Maybe better infrastructure would’ve made a difference? Just feels like there's always room for improvement when it comes to disaster preparedness.

  4. Why were certain dams dismantled and demolished which would have prevented this tragedy??? Someone needs to explain why and face manslaughter charges. Its not down to Climate change as the BBC were quick to report…

  5. I feel really sorry for wictim of this tragedy , but we need to understand about the rivers and floating ,rivers will always go over filed cose the float , what you expect when building or buying the house next to the river ? Building industry should be at least 10m above the river standard level ,that will cut lots of problems.

  6. Hard to believe the weather forecasters didn’t anticipate this. There is nothing other than an early warning and going to higher elevations, you can’t stop the damage from natural disasters.

  8. So nobody is going to mention the 200 dams removed for EU "environmental" reasons? The same reason s we don't dredge rivers then whine when they flood? How about Span complaining that the $10M upgrade to their cloud seeding flights might have an ill effect on weather if it blows the wrong way, as it did in the UAE recently? No? These Climate Shills are causing extreme weather to push a lie now.

  9. Such a mass is impossible to control, but it happened partly at the Spaniards' own request… Their terrain is often mountainous, and they have concreted their surroundings: concrete street walls, concrete driveways, concrete streets, concrete fences. And now the water rushes down this smooth gutter like a locomotive, and does not flow calmly like it does along a riverbed.

  10. Tell the truth. This is on the EU. The Dams & barriers that protected Valencia region have been removed to restore Bio-Diversity. I have just come back from Spain & the people are really angry. This disaster is on the EU & Spanish politicians who knew Valencia is a flood bowl with 700 years of flooding but removed the protection anyway. They have blood on their hands!
