Ronald Reagan says ‘sorry’ to Margaret Thatcher in private phone call

In 1983 President Reagan apologised to the British prime minister after the US invaded Grenada – a Commonwealth country – without giving her advance warning. This newly released tape recording of a private telephone call between them reveals the conversation.

  1. Thatchers very English comment about there being a bit of work to do for America betrays a slight annoyance. She's keen to get off the phone and for Reagan to get back to cleaning up the mess he made.

  2. Reagan was probably the only World Leader who Thatcher respected enough to receive a call like this & leave it at that. Anyone else would have received a tongue-lashing & proverbial handbag slap. This wouldn't be the only time Reagan stepped on her toes. It was clear that bigger world events were swinging in the periphery & she would need the support of the US President if things went "wobbly".
