October 7 attack one year on: Inside an Israeli kibbutz terrorised by Hamas

Before Hamas’s rampage through southern Israel on 7 October, the kibbutz of Nir Oz was home to 400 people. It was a lively community that had historically enjoyed good relationships with the population in neighbouring Gaza.

Situated just 1.2 miles (2km) east of the Gaza Strip, Nir Oz suffered some of the worst violence on 7 October with a quarter of its population killed or kidnapped and, unlike other kibbutzim, the Israeli army did not arrive until after Hamas fighters and later waves of looters had already left.

The Guardian’s Bethan McKernan visited Nir Oz to see what was left of the kibbutz almost a year after the attacks that reignited violence across the Middle East

  1. yeah you don’t get to have an anniversary for being a victim of an attack when you have relentless oppressed and murdered palestinians both before and after said attack.. are we going to pretend israel has just been doing nothing but mourning this past year?

  2. I was surprised and rather moved by the last message of this report. I feel though that this Israeli government has spread enough hate for generations to come. I feel sorry for the people of this kibutz, hope that their people will come back alive

  3. I blame corrupt Benjamin Netanyahu as much as Hamas for 10/07/2023 tragedy. In his lust for power and to avoid/delay his corruption case, Netanyahu purposefully turned a blind eye to Israeli intelligence and left the border purposely unprotected knowing this would happen. Shame on him! Shame! RIP to those dead and dying on both sides due to this corrupt individual!

  4. These villagers enjoyed years of peace and freedom, that was denied to Gazana…Clearly, they were never educated as to the plight of the Palestinians, just across the way..Try rebuilding Gaza in a couple of years!!!!

  5. We are divided and manipulated, but we can change everything, but only all together! Friends, the International Social Project CREATIVE SOCIETY is gaining tremendous momentum in the world. People from different countries, nationalities and religions are coming together to build a just society. Only together we can change our world!

  6. October 7 was an instrument of Netanyahu just as much as it was his children of Hamas….I feel sorry for these people that were used like bait to start a regional war. I hope the hostages are freed as soon as possible.

  7. The Hannibal Directive inflicted an incredible toll on top of the crimes committed by Hamas… up to a hundred individuals, half Isreali border guards and spotters will killed by the IDF on October by helicopter gunship fire. Bodies were found burnt in vehicles from Apache helicopter fire. Tank shells were fired into homes where both Hamas and captives were held up. It has been reported that it took up to 6 hours for the IDF to respond to the attack. The IDF was aware of the pending attack 12 months prior to October 7.
