  1. Just turn the island into a tax haven like Mauritius, Cayman Islands, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Isle of Man, etc. Be creative here, build a cryptocurrency haven?

  2. How exactly is culture being eroded? Because they need to pay taxes and pay the Gov back for the aid? On one hand, I get the desire to be independent. But on the other hand – got a bailout..

  3. I AM ASHAMED OF THE HEAVY HANDED TACTICS OF THE FEDERAL AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT, MORE PARTICULARLY THEIR BULLY BOY TACTICS, BY WHICH THEY ENDEAVOUR TO JUSTIFY THEIR CRIMINAL ACTS OF THEFT, AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF NORFOLK ISLAND.
THIS THEFT OF COUNTRY IS SIMPLY A REPEAT OF THE THEFT OF AUSTRALIA FROM THE INDIGENOUS ABORIGINALS, 200 PLUS YEARS AGO !!!
DISGUSTING CRIMINAL ACTS, SUCH AS THOSE PERPETRATED AGAINST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IN BOTH LANDS !!!
REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT TELL US WHAT IS GOING ON, ON NORFOLK ISLAND, I KNOW FOR A FACT, THE LARGER MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER, INTENDED, NOR ASKED FOR, AUSTRALIA TO WALK IN AND STEAL THE ISLAND'S SOVERIEGNTY

  4. They have to keep in mind they supported this to receive a bail out, however, in saying that, if they're willing to pay the Australian Government back with interest, well they can have their independence. If Norfolk Island gets independence, the economy would need to diversify and also become more self reliant.

The island could make a lot of revenue from fishing licenses, educational services (especially marine and environmental research as well as pilot training) in addition to existing tourism which has potential to grow (just build a community casino). If the island got a fibre internet connection, they could be a place for lifestyle seeking remote workers. Pushing the opportunities further, they could grow hemp as that becomes more common. They could possibly do offshore hydrogen production from wind and also maybe biofuels.

As for self reliance, if they could get geothermal and solar and/or wind with storage (batteries and hydrogen storage), that would be a great first step. In addition to that, modern farming such as vertical farming could help provide with increased demand.
