New Zealand PM apologies for widespread abuse of children in care

New Zealand’s prime minister Christopher Luxon has made a formal apology in parliament for the abuse, torture and neglect of children and vulnerable adults in state, foster and church care.

Over a period of seven decades, it’s estimated 200,000 people in care experienced “unimaginable” abuse, according to a government inquiry released in July. “It was horrific. It was heartbreaking. It was wrong. And it should never have happened,” the New Zealand prime minister said
