Investigation of AFL Concussion Leads to Quill Award for Guardian Australia

Congratulations to Guardian Australia investigative reporter Daniel Kerr and journalist Andy Pycroft on their well-deserved Quill Award won for their investigation into concussion in the Australian Football League (AFL)!

Kerr and Pycroft’s amazing investigation looked at the decades of cover-up within the AFL on concussion risks. It exposed the lack of research within the sport, the AFL’s silence on what players went through and the heartbreaking cases of players whose lives were affected.

This investigation raised awareness of the need for the AFL to make changes to better protect players and make sure no other players would go through similar experiences to those exposed in the research. From the investigation, the AFL formed a concussion review board and awarded a million dollars to research concussion in AFL.

Kerr and Pycroft’s investigation and the work of Guardian Australia has been recognised for its value in on-the-ground reporting and its effect on increasing the safety of the sport and the players. To view the investigation, which resulted in the Quill Award, visit the link provided!
