Condemnation as China and Philippines trade blame over latest collision

Australia has joined the U.S. in condemning China after a violent collision between a Chinese vessel and the Philippines Coast Guard in the South China Sea. It’s the fifth altercation in as many weeks, as a new flashpoint emerges in the disputed waters.

China and the Philippines have blamed each other for the ramming incident, which took place off ‘Sabina Shoal’, around 75 nautical miles from the Philippines coast and 630 nautical miles from China. Chinese state media claims the Philippines vessel was “illegally stranded” and caused the collision.

In July, China and the Philippines appeared to be seeking de-escalation, signing a deal to end confrontations at the long-disputed Second Thomas Shoal. But since then, there have been five incidents at Sabina Shoal.
