Being childfree by choice: five women on why they decided not to have kids

As part of the Guardian’s Childfree series, five women discuss why having children isn’t for them – and how others perceive them as a result. ‘There’s no wrong way to be a woman,’ says Sabrina, 25.

  1. My wife and I have been happily married for 41 years, and we chose not to have children. We are retired teachers and had kids that way! We have no regrets. None of our friends judged us negatively but some of our family did.

  2. Started for me in childhood… i also i never " played " dolls or house there was no challenge. Abd having undx'd adhd i figyre the feeling woukd kick in…never did.
When do men explain their reasons ?

I also had 5 aunts and 2 uncles who never married, so going down the path was worth exploring

  3. Im 43, man. I've never wanted kids either. Recently, though, I reached my goals financially. Mortgage is paid off. Vehicles paid, too. Comfortable investment portfolio and large sum of savings. My close friends have become parents. I love their little kiddo! As a guy, i am considering having a family to each their own. It's never too late if you change your mind. I can adopt or get married to someone who wants kids. Freedom of choice is awesome 👌 👏

  4. I am grateful for these videos. I know that if I found out I was pregnant today, I would embrace the situation and become a mother. But, my husband and I aren't trying and don't plan on having kids. A lot of it is finances, a lot of it is I physically don't think my body can handle it. I don't think my mental health can handle it. I don't know.. maybe those are excuses to make me feel better, but I, like these women don't have the "feeling" like I want to be a mother. I have have.

  5. I have two kiddos and done. However, now I get where they are coming from, most of the times the kids you do have and the people whom advise you to have children is no where to be found when it time to help. You become mentally drained and end up hurting yourself or kids.

  6. That’s perfectly fine if you really don’t feel the calling… but just live the consecrated single life… don’t be sleeping around ..for that is the loss of your soul

  7. The part about if a 5 year old came up and said I wana be a mommy and no one would challenge that. THAT. Why is it that our child free by choice views are challenged, just because it's different? The patriarchy made this an issue..
I'm so happy this is being talked about more and more.

  8. Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor. Why import fossil fuels when wind and solar energy can be produced locally and solar energy can power electric vehicles. We need solutions not just sympathy.

  9. Might aswell remove your ovaries and all your female parts otherwise your body will be getting ready every month whilst your mind isnt. Not worth going through all that pain if you dont want children you should donate to women who have issues with their fertility who want kids

  10. Being childfree is chosing to be a mooch in your retirement. Who is paying for the roads, hospitals, police etc when youre retired? My kids are, thats who. You are not fully supporting yourself with your retirement savings, just sponging off those who made the sacrifice of having kids, and their offspring
