Two First Nations deaths in custody within days at Canberra prison

Two First Nations men have died in custody at Canberra’s Alexander Maconochie Centre within days of each other.

A 38-year-old man was suffering a medical episode about 2.40am yesterday and, despite efforts by prison staff and paramedics, he was declared dead.

“We acknowledge the grief of the deceased’s loved ones and extend our sincere condolences to them,” an ACT Corrective Services spokesperson said.

“ACT Policing have informed next of kin and are investigating the incident as all deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest.”

A 73-year-old man also died in custody just a few days prior.

He had been remanded at the same prison and was receiving palliative care in hospital when he died about 6.20pm on February 12.

“The individual had been unwell and receiving medical care since being remanded to the Alexander Maconochie Centre earlier this year,” an ACT Corrective Services spokesperson said.

Police will prepare reports for the coroner. Both incidents are subject to a coronial inquiry.

Their deaths make up the first two Indigenous deaths in custody since January 1. Last year, there were 27 Indigenous deaths in custody.
