Tragic fires in Melbourne’s south-east leave two dead as Victoria Police call in arson chemist

Two people have died following separate fatal house fires in Melbourne, prompting police investigations into the causes of the blazes.

Emergency services raced to a home in Melbourne’s south-east shortly after 2am on Friday.

On arrival, they found the Langwarrin property fully engulfed in flames.

Four people were inside the home when it burst into flames, three managing to escape with no injuries.

A fourth person was found dead inside a bungalow at the back of the home, Victoria Police confirmed.

The deadly Langwarrin fire occurred just hours after another fatal blaze broke out at a unit on Franklin Court in the neighbouring suburb of Frankston.

Witnesses dialled Triple-0 when they noticed the residence was engulfed in flames.

As crews were scouring the property for people trapped inside, they found a person deceased.

Both people are yet to be formally identified.

Victoria Police confirmed an arson chemist will be visiting the Langwarrin and Frankston homes on Friday to investigate what sparked the fatal fires.

Anyone who witnessed the incidents, or has CCTV, dashcam footage, or relevant information, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
