Tasmania and southern Victoria battle bitterly cold temperatures, gusty winds as cold front passes through

Parts of Australia’s southeast have been warned of freezing temperatures as a cold front brings damaging winds and showers.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Angus Hines said residents could expect “another cold front across the southeast, a fresh round of chilly conditions, showers and mountain snow for Tasmania and southern Victoria”.

“Keep an eye out for damaging wind warnings as we do anticipate the wind to really strengthen with that front,” he said.

Sky News Weather’s Wendy John said Canberrans overnight “got a good sign that autumn is well and truly on its way”.

The nation’s capital faces “below freezing” temperatures on Sunday, seeing a minimum of -1C in the morning.

Meanwhile, Melbourne is also looking chilly as it saw a minimum of 7.4C, as parts of Alpine Tasmania reached 5C.

It comes in stark contrast to much of the rest of the nation with northern areas exceeding 30C, while Perth and Brisbane are set to hit a top of 29C and 28C degrees respectively.

Most of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria have been spared from the bitter cold as a couple of highs sweep through.

“This cold front is bringing some strong winds and showers to the rim of Victoria and to Tasmania’s west and that’s bringing with it a severe weather warning, (with) damaging winds developing over parts of the northeast of Tasmania and Furneaux Islands,” Ms John said.

The BOM’s severe weather warning reports a “vigorous west to northwesterly airstream” is extending across the state ahead of the cold front crossing the region on Sunday.

“It is expected to bring damaging winds to coastal parts of the northeast from late morning into the afternoon,” it said.

Residents in the northeast will have some reprieve as damaging winds ease later in the day while the cold front clears the state and winds turn west-southerly.

“However, gusty conditions are expected to continue over exposed coastal areas and elevated terrain into Monday,” the BOM said.

Meanwhile in Victoria, a strong wind warning is currently in place for the Port Phillip, Western Port and West Coast areas.

The Central Coast, Central Gippsland Coast and East Gippsland Coast are likely to be impacted by the strong gusts on Monday.
