Search and rescue efforts enter second day after 23-year-old falls into Brisbane River at Jindalee, in Brisbane’s south-west

Search and rescue efforts have entered a second day as SES, water police, and specialist divers continue to look for a man who fell into the Brisbane River at Jindalee on Sunday.

Queensland Police Service (QPS) said the 23-year-old fell into the water at the Jindalee Boat Ramp just before 5.40am on Sunday and failed to resurface.

Emergency Services raced to the river and began conducting foot and water patrols, with water police, and swift water rescue members of the Queensland Fire Department on the scene.

The search and rescue operation picked up again on Monday, focusing on the river and shoreline upstream from Seventeen Mile Rocks, located about 5km from the ramp where the 23-year-old was last seen.

Polair and SES are on scene on Monday, escalating the search efforts.

On Sunday, QPS Acting Inspector Shane Thow said the man was a local from Brisbane’s southern suburbs and was with family and friends when he slipped into the water.

He said there was no indication the group had been “mucking around” and police did not know if alcohol was involved in the “social engagement”.

The 23-year-old is not a strong swimmer, he said, and his friends tried to help before he slipped below the water surface.

His family and friends have been offered support, and authorities have pleaded with any witnesses to contact Queensland Police Service.
