Police searching caves and mine shafts in Victoria’s High Country for accused killer Dezi Freeman

Police are searching mine shafts and caves in Victoria’s High Country in a bid to find alleged cop killer Dezi Freeman.

The 56-year-old has been on the run from authorities since August 26 when he allegedly shot dead two police officers executing a search warrant at a property in Porepunkah.

Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart, 34, were killed while a third officer was seriously injured.

Freeman, 56, fled into nearby bushland following the shooting and despite extensive searches for the fugitive he has not been found.

As the manhunt for Freeman nears its third week, Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said police were searching caves and mine shafts in the area for the alleged killer.

“He is believed to know the area extremely well. The countryside is littered with caves, with mine shafts and he is believed to be very, very capable in the bush,” Thomas said.

“We continue to clear the mine shafts (and) caves by our experts out there.

“As I’ve said before we have a number of specialist units from across Victoria Police that are assisting with the search and they are heavily armed and they are out there.”

Speaking directly to Freeman, Thomas urged him to hand himself into a police station so that a safe surrender plan can be facilitated.

“You will not get away with this. If you are out there, you will be caught. It’s just about when and and we won’t stop until that occurs,” he said.

Huge reward on offer for Freeman’s arrest

Police have announced a reward of up to $1M for information about Freeman’s whereabouts that lead to his arrest.

The reward is the largest ever offered for an arrest in Victoria.

Police had earlier said they believed Freeman was being helped or harboured by people in the local rural community.

They now say there is nothing to suggest he is being assisted by a specific person.

“However given the difficult terrain and the requirement for various supplies this remains a possibility,” Victoria Police said.

“Police are also open to the possibilities that he remains at large alone or is dead as a result of self-harm.”

Thomas said it’s hoped the reward will coax anyone out in the community with any information to come forward.

The hunt for Freeman will only come to an end with assistance from members of the public, he said.

“This figure recognises the seriousness of this violent offending and our commitment to locating Freeman as soon as possible so that he is no longer a risk to the broader community,” Thomas said.

“Our aim in offering this reward is that it will lead someone out there, who may not have been willing to come forward until this time, to contact police.

“There is no doubt that up to a million dollars is a life changing amount of money for anyone and has the potential to completely change their circumstances.”

Freeman was last seen wearing dark green tracksuit pants, dark green rain jacket, brown Blundstone boots and reading glasses.

It’s believed he remains armed and residents in Porepunkah and surrounds are urged to be careful and not approach him.

Anyone with any information about Freeman’s whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
