Man charged with murder after stabbing following night out in Brisbane

A man has been charged with the murder of another man who police say died as he tried to escape the crime scene.

Police said the 39-year-old victim had been socialising with extended family on Saturday night before an incident early on Sunday morning.

Residents of the Bowen Hills apartment block where the incident occurred said there was blood in the building’s lift.

“There was this bloke saying, ‘Help, I’m dying, I’m dying’,” one resident told 9News.

Emergency services were called to the building on Hamilton Place about 4.15am and the West End man was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.

A 22-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were taken into police custody yesterday. The man, from Bowen Hills, was charged with murder late last night.

“My understanding is that the victim has attempted to remove himself from the crime scene,” Acting Detective Inspector Murray O’Connell said.

“He was taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital but sadly he succumbed of his injuries and passed away a short time later.

“We believe that they’re extended family members, but we’re still trying to work that out at the moment, just the dynamics of the family.”

O’Connell said police had seized a knife believed to have been the weapon used in the murder.

The charged man is expected to face Brisbane Magistrates Court today.
