England great Michael Vaughan left fuming after Darren Lehmann reveal

Michael Vaughan has slammed England’s management in the wake of a bizarre reveal from former Australian coach Darren Lehmann during the Ashes series.

Lehmann, who now works in the County cricket system with Northampton, claimed last month that he never had any dialogue with the England selectors before the tour.

“Who are the selectors, by the way? I’ve not seen them in my time in County cricket,” he told BBC’s Test Match Special during the third Test.

“Can someone tell us, please? I’ve never spoken to a selector and never seen a selector and I’m a County coach … unbelievable.”

The comments from Lehmann caused quite a stir online and have drawn the ire of Vaughan, who captained the side during a successful 2000s era.

Speaking on the Stick To Cricket podcast, the former Test skipper explained why somebody from the English hierarchy should have spoken to Lehmann.

“I heard Darren Lehmann give an interview … I was absolutely staggered, it pissed me off,” Vaughan said.

“Not only is he an ex-Australian Test cricketer, a wonderful player who knows these conditions better than anybody, but he’s a coach within our system.

“He’s got players that are surely on England’s radar, maybe one or two, there won’t be many at Northampton, no disrespect – but this England management hasn’t even thought ‘Boof, can we have a lunch with you and pick your brain’.

“I’ve been coming here for eight years and I didn’t have a conversation with them.

“When you give information, you take it or leave it. I think it’s very important when you’re in a leadership role that you get information and use that information how you want.”

Vaughan’s eight-year stint he alludes to has seen him work extensively on the Fox Cricket broadcast team across Test series and Big Bash seasons.

England lost the series after Australia took an unassailable 3-0 lead in Adelaide, before scoring a drought-breaking win in the Boxing Day Test.

The series will conclude at the SCG with the fifth Test starting on Sunday.
