Woman taken to hospital after being pinned by car at Goolwa Bakery

Witnesses say a 62-year-old woman’s legs were pinned by a vehicle which crashed into the Goolwa Bakery on Sunday morning.

The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Several staff members and customers were inside the bakery when a car left the road and crashed into the shop on Hutchinson Street in Goolwa, on the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide, at about 11am.

“We were out the back decorating cakes and preparing for the day and there was this almighty bang,” bakery worker Karen Varcoe said.

“It was like an explosion and then a big whoosh. We didn’t know what happened.

“Thankfully our staff got out of the way in time, but the poor lady was on the other side of the counter so she took the full brunt of the car.

“She was pinned, poor lady, between the front counter and the car.”

Ms Varcoe said the woman was a regular customer who had been waiting for her coffee.

“I do send our love and hope that she feels better soon,” she said.

She said a customer and a staff member also sustained some cuts from broken glass during the incident.

“I’m just glad everyone is not seriously hurt,” she said.

The driver, a 69-year-old Goolwa woman, was taken to hospital as a precaution but police said she did not appear to have been injured in the crash.

“She was in shock, the poor darling. It came in so quickly, so fast,” Ms Varcoe said.

“We’ll clean up, get things sorted and hopefully we’ll be able to still trade as best we can in a bit of an incapacitated manner.”

SES workers attended the scene to assess the structure.

The car has been towed from the scene and police say investigations into the crash are ongoing.
