Two children have died after Sydenham house fire in Melbourne’s north-west

Two children who were rescued from a burning home in Melbourne’s north-west earlier this week have died in hospital.

Firefighters rescued the five-year-old girl and a one-year-old girl from a Fergus Court property in Sydenham just after 9:30pm on Sunday, along with a three-year-old boy.

The three children were found unconscious and treated at the scene.

They were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The two girls died surrounded by family on Wednesday morning.

The three-year-old boy remains in a critical condition.

Emergency services were sent to the property after callers to triple-0 reported hearing a loud bang around 9:30pm on Sunday.

Firefighters arrived to find flames and thick smoke billowing from the back of the single-storey brick house.

Detectives believe the blaze began in the rear of the property, while the three children were in a different section of the house.

Police said both the mother of the three children and the biological father of one of the children were known to police.

The investigation into the fire remains ongoing, as Arson and Explosives Squad detectives try to ascertain what may have caused the blaze, and who was in the property at the time and just prior to the fire.

Victoria Police has asked anyone with further information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
