Police release pictures of metal tool believed to have been involved in fatal M80 crash

Police continue to seek the driver of a truck linked to a fatal crash in Melbourne’s north-west on Thursday.

The crash, which took place on the M80 Ring Road in St Albans, is believed to have been caused by a metal tool that came off the truck’s back and struck another car.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have released images of the tool and appealed to the public for assistance.

The tool is believed to be a Riv-Nail Driver system — a specialised tool designed for maintaining conveyer belts in the mining, manufacturing, and food processing industries.

The fatal collision occurred around 4pm on Thursday, and it is understood a white truck was travelling on the M80 Ring Road when the metal item came off its back.

The tool travelled across the freeway and struck a car travelling towards Greensborough.

A 46-year-old Deer Park woman, who was the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene.

Police said the truck failed to stop at the scene and was last seen travelling towards Altona.

Detectives would like to speak to the driver of the truck and are appealing for anyone with dash cam vision to contact police.
