The White House says they reviewed the status of US preparations to help Israel defend itself against a ballistic missile attack from Iran, and to protect US personnel in the region.

By Riley Stuart in Jerusalem

Sirens are sounding across Israel. They’ve been going since 7:30pm Monday local time (2:30am AEST Tuesday).

I’m Riley Stuart and I’m in the ABC’s bureau in Jerusalem. I’m going to talk you through what’s going on.

This afternoon, local time, US security sources said Iran was preparing to attack Israel “imminently”.

Not long after that, Israel’s chief military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, announced the attack would be on a “wide scale”. He warned the country’s air defence systems were not absolute.

The sirens have been sounding non-stop here since 7:30pm and there are massive bangs overhead.
