The missing campers case has made headlines for more than four years. Here’s a very brief summary of what’s led us to today.
March 2020: Retirees Carol Clay and Russell Hill travel to the Wonnangatta Valley for a camping getaway. Greg Lynn, who is on his own solo hunting trip, encounters the pair at a location known as Bucks Camp.
March 20, 2020: Ms Clay and Mr Hill die after a campsite fight with Lynn. There are no witnesses. Lynn later tells police a dispute about a his hunting activities, loud music and Mr Hill’s drone escalated to a physical fight. Lynn burns the campsite and puts the bodies in his trailer, dumping them hours away. Ms Clay and Mr Hill’s families report them missing in the following days.
November 22, 2021: Homicide detectives arrest and charge Greg Lynn, finding what is left of the campers’ bodies a week later. Lynn says he is not responsible for the deaths, arguing Ms Clay was shot by accident and Mr Hill inadvertedly stabbed himself during a struggle.
June 25, 2024: Greg Lynn is found guilty of murdering Carol Clay, but a jury acquits him of a murder charge relating to Mr Hill.
November 18, 2024: Greg Lynn faces the Supreme Court to be sentenced.
