Gold Coast teacher stood down after allegedly exposing himself to students

A Gold Coast high school teacher has been stood down after allegedly exposing himself to students.

The 50-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, September 14, and charged with two counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16.

The charges relate to an alleged exposure incident.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said the man was released on bail on the same day as his arrest.

Detectives launched an investigation into the alleged incident after receiving a report “involving a teacher at an Ormeau school” the day prior.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Queensland Department of Education said the department was informed by police of the charges and the staff member had been stood down from his position at the school.

“As the matter is now before the courts, the department cannot provide further comment,” the spokesperson said.

Several days before the arrest, parents and caregivers were told of the “alleged incident involving a staff member from our school”.

They were sent an email letter from the principal of Ormeau Woods State High School dated September 11, which has been seen by the ABC.

“I want to reassure you that we treat the safety and welfare of your children, our students, as our highest priority at all times,” the principal wrote.

“Rest assured the matter is being appropriately handled in line with departmental processes.

“We understand media coverage may potentially cause distress and anxiety for families.

“I am only too happy to meet with any parent who has a concern and support services are available for anyone who may require assistance.”

The teacher is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on October 14.
