Chinese restaurant apologies after diners allegedly urinated into hotpot broth

Chinese hotpot chain Haidilao has offered to compensate thousands of diners who had visited one of its busiest locations after two diners were filmed urinating into their hotpot broth.

Video circulating online appears to show the incident that occurred in a private room at an outlet in Shanghai.

The restaurant apologised to customers on social media, saying they had replaced all hotpot equipment and dining utensils.

It is understood the incident occurred on February 24, however, the restaurant only became aware of the incident four days later, according to Reuters.

All other crockery and utensils have also been disinfected.

“We fully understand that the distress caused to our customers by this incident cannot be fully compensated for by any means, but we will do our utmost to take responsibility,” the company said in a statement.

Police have since detained two men, both 17 years old, according to a statement issued by Shanghai police, obtained by Reuters.
