Victoria Police senior sergeant Ian Brooks said a huge number of emergency services attended the scene.

“They worked tirelessly to try and save this poor person but unfortunately they passed away,” Brooks said.

The truck driver remained at the scene and is helping police with the investigation.

A statement from his company, Bendigo firm Power’s Country Express said the “experienced” driver “is in shock”.

“This is an incredibly distressing time for everyone and we are devastated.”

The crash occurred 250m from the boy’s school, Girton Grammar School.

Principal Dr Emma O’Rielly said the school was focusing on supporting its community.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy, as the principal of this of school and as a parent I’m absolutely devastated by what’s occurred,” she said.

“We’ve had a young life cut short, we’ve had a family altered forever.”
