Ian Thorpe, one of Australia’s most renowned athletes, has reportedly been fleeced of $150,000 worth of valuables in a major break-in.
Ben Fordham reported on the 2GB breakfast show that the Olympic legend was spotted at Paddington Police Station in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Thursday afternoon to alert officers that he had been the victim of a robbery.
Thorpe apparently remained there for an “extended period of time”.
“We believe he’s in the red to the tune of $150,000,” Fordham stated on Friday morning.
“There are no details about what’s allegedly happened to Ian Thorpe. We don’t know if he’s been robbed online or in person.”
Upon contacting Thorpe’s management, Fordham said they were initially unaware about the incident.
After speaking with his client, Thorpe’s manager confirmed that he had gone to the police station to “talk about an insurance job”.
Thorpe’s manager James Erskine later called into the program and stated Thorpe has been the victim of a break-in and had numerous valuables stolen including jewellery and watches.
He reiterated that no Olympic medals were swiped.
“He has had some things stolen from his house — watches, jewellery, some personal items,” he said.
“He called up his insurers, they said go and make a police report,” Erskine said.
He also stated that Thorpe was unaware of any obvious signs of a break-in.
“I have no idea what the value is to be honest,” he said.
NSW Police said in a statement that at “about 4pm on Thursday 5 June 2025, a 42-year-old man attended Paddington Police Station to report an alleged theft incident”.
“Officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident,” the statement read and stressed that there was no further information available.
