Adelaide commuters about to be hit by six-month tram line closure

Adelaide commuters and sports fans are facing significant disruptions as an extended shutdown looms for the tram line between South Terrace and Glenelg.

The closure will start this weekend and is expected to last for about six months, impacting travel to the coast and potentially affecting access to events.

While an inconvenience for commuters, the shutdown is necessary for major works on three level crossings located on Marion Road, Cross Road, and Plympton.

“We are closing the tram lines to do some much-needed work to a number of intersections that are clogging up traffic in our peak and our off-peak times,” Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said.

The disruptions extend beyond tram services, with road closures also scheduled.

South Road will be fully closed between Aroha Terrace, Black Forest and Wellington Street in Glandore next weekend.

Starting at 10pm on Friday until 5am on Monday, closures will also impact Marion Road, Cross Road, Morphett Road, and the Mike Turtur Bikeway throughout August.

For those who rely on the tram, substitute buses will be in place, running every 10 to 20 minutes, day and night, and every five minutes during peak periods.

“People just need to do a little bit of homework perhaps to become aware what service and the timing of that is going to suit their needs,” said Charles Mountain of the RAA.

The South Terrace to city tram line will also be closed this weekend.
