Dua Lipa sues Samsung Electronics for $US15 million over unauthorised use of her image on TV boxes

Global superstar Dua Lipa is suing a tech giant, claiming the company used her image to help sell TVs without her permission.

The singer’s legal team filed the lawsuit against Samsung Electronics on Friday in a California district court, according to a complaint obtained by People magazine.

Lipa, 30, accused Samsung of using a copyrighted backstage image of her on cardboard TV boxes sold throughout the US without her consent.

The singer is seeking $US15 million (around $AU21 million) in damages, in addition to a share of profits connected to sales of the product.

“Ms Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, without consideration, and as to which she had no say, control, or input whatsoever,” the lawsuit states.

“Ms Lipa did not allow and would not have allowed this use.”

The suit further claims the image falsely suggests Lipa endorsed or was affiliated with the product, encouraging potential customers to buy the product because it featured the popular singer.

The filing also cites multiple social media posts from fans who claimed they decided to buy the TV after seeing Lipa’s image on the box.

“I wasn’t even planning on buying a TV but I saw the box so I decided to get it,” one post cited in the filing reads.

“I’ve always said if you need anything selling just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it,” another post reads.

The filing further alleges Samsung continued using the image despite receiving cease-and-desist demands from the singer’s representatives.

According to the complaint, the demand was sent after Lipa became aware of Samsung’s unauthorised use of her image in June 2025.

“Samsung’s response has been dismissive and callous,” the complaint alleges, adding the products “remain on the market to this day”.

According to the lawsuit, the image at the centre of the dispute is of Lipa backstage at a live music TV event at Austin City Limits in 2024 and is registered with the US Copyright Office.

While Lipa has “collaborated with Porsche, Apple, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., and many other high luxury and fashion houses”, the singer never agreed to a promotional deal with Samsung, the filing states.

Lipa’s attorneys claim Samsung intentionally capitalised on the singer’s celebrity status and brand recognition to help market its televisions.
