The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashed al-Maktoum, died on the Gold Coast on January 4 in 2006.

The United Arab Emirates Deputy President died at the Palazzo Versace resort from a suspected heart attack.

The horse racing figure had travelled to Australia to prepare for the Magic Millions yearling sales.

Dubai authorities declared 40 days of mourning, with government offices closed for seven days and stock exchanges in Dubai halted.

Shops and businesses were closed, school exams were postponed and a Fatboy Slim concert scheduled for that evening was cancelled.

The leader was succeeded by his brother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as ruler of Dubai.
