A Mexican woman has been jailed for 20 years for her part in the killings of Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend in the country’s north.
The Robinson brothers and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad were on a surf trip last April in the Baja California region, near Ensenada, when they were shot dead.
A court was told Ari Gisell was seeking the tyres on the surfers’ car and instructed her then-boyfriend Jesús Gerardo to “bring me a good phone and good tyres for my pickup truck”.
Surnames were withheld during her trial in line with Mexican court procedure.
Jesús Gerardo and two others, Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús, tracked the vehicle to the campsite where the tourists were staying, then robbed them before gunning them down.
The cases against these three men remain before the courts.
The parents of the Robinson brothers gave emotional statements via video link, the ABC reports.
“We dreamed of seeing them grow older, of having children. That’s all taken now,” said their mother Debra Robinson.
“We live with their absence.”
A tearful Ari Gisel apologised in court, saying “nothing I can say will compensate you or give you peace”.
The killings of the Robinson brothers, who grew up in Perth, shocked Australia.
Months after the deaths, the brothers’ parents Debra and Martin Robinson set up a non-profit charity in their sons’ names aimed at helping young people make positive changes in their lives.
