Although NBN 50 is the most popular internet speed tier, if you spend just a few dollars more (and have the right technology type) you can score an internet connection that’s 10 times faster.
NBN 500 is one of the latest speed tiers to hit the Australian market since NBN recently rolled-out its speed upgrades.
NBN 500 plans boast maximum download speeds of 500Mbps and aren’t priced too much more than the average NBN 50 plan.

However, there’s a slight catch: only those on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) fixed-line connection types are eligible. If you’re either an FTTN and FTTC household, you can now get a free upgrade to FTTP by ordering an NBN 500 plan or faster from an eligible provider.

The average NBN 50 plan sits around $63 per month but plans can range from as little as $59 per month right up to $109 per month.
While the average NBN 500 plan would set you back just $68 per month on average, and prices range from $63 to $107 per month.
The most popular NBN 500 plan currently in the WhistleOut database is from Dodo.
It’s the most affordable plan thanks to its discount of $30 off per month for the first six months.
This offer ends December 2, 2025.
Close behind is SpinTel with its NBN 500 plan priced at $64 per month.
This includes a discount of $22.95 per month for the first six months.
After this, the price increases to $86.95 but since it’s a no-contract plan, you can simply switch providers before the six months are up to avoid paying the full price.
Tangerine is another provider offering a generous discount on its NBN 500 plan.
For a full 12 months, Tangerine customers will save $20 per month.
After this, the price increases to $88.90 per month, but again, this is a no-contract plan so you’re free to switch when the year is up. This offer ends December 1, 2025.
At the time of writing, providers including Aussie Broadband, Optus, Tangerine, More, TPG, SpinTel, Superloop, iiNet, Southern Phone, Leaptel, Launtel, Swoop, AGL, iiNet, Dodo, iPrimus and more are offering NBN 500 plans to new customers.
If this is you but you want even faster speeds, NBN 750 is another option.
Prices start at $75 per month and many offer six months of promotional discounts, however NBN 750 plans are also only available for those with either an FTTP or HFC connection type.
