The impact of ultra-processed foods like crisps, bread and cereals is a “ticking timebomb” to our health, a leading scientist has said.

The BBC’s Panorama programme has been investigating the impact of ultra-processed foods with the help of identical twins on very different diets.

The effect on their health was clear after just two weeks.

  7. Here's a great recipe that tastes like a thick chocolate milkshake. You need a strong blender. 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, 1 cup plant milk like soy, 1/2 cup frozen cauliflower, 1 cup salt free black beans rinsed drained and frozen, 3 pitted dates soaked in 1/4 cup water overnight, a few icecubes and enough water to get consistency you want. Absolutely decadent and keeps me full for 5-6 hours. Finally a painless way to eat beans and cauliflower.

  8. So they said their diet would be matched exactly for calories and fiber. But somehow the one twin gained weight and the other lost weight. How do you explain this? You cannot create matter out of nothing, the first law of thermodynamics state that enery cannot be created nor destroyed. Clearly they did not consume the same amount of calories.

  10. It's a bit counter productive that the scale is so limited. Ultra processed foods category includes some foods that are OK, all things considered, up to some really actually nasty toxic stuff. Lumping them together will just make some people give up

  11. This is so flawed because it was matched for calories, fat, sugar, and fibre. Nutrition isn't based solely off these nutrients because there's other things such as protein, sodium, what type of fat (unsaturated vs saturated vs trans), micronutrients such as all the B vitamins, C, A, D, Calcium etc. There's also a difference between how quickly your body absorbs carbohydrates, which is a concept called the glycemic index scale. Faster absorption is generally worse than slower absorption as there will be less insulin spikes. There are ultra processed foods that have healthy levels of micronutrients and macronutrients; all you have to do is read the labels and make educated choices. You can make up for eating unhealthy foods with healthy foods. An example could be instant noodle's unhealthy traits (high sodium, pure carbohydrate food) being balanced out by eating less sodium and carbs for the rest of the day, and finding other foods that are high in other good things such as the micronutrients listed above.

  12. I also discovered that the way you feel and think about the food makes a difference. Wasn’t there a test on ppl who were given the same milkshake one was told it was nutrient dense the other nothing and the other one digested it better and had better markers? So what is the truth??
