Woman charged with murder over the death of an eight-month-old in Perth’s south


A 28-year-old mother accused of murdering her eight-month-old baby has faced court for the first time via video link.

Detectives deemed the death suspicious and began questioning a woman, believed to be the baby’s mother.

The 28-year-old, Alanah Gail Smithwick, was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital in a stable condition where she remains.

She has been charged with murder and will face court again at a later date.

Forensic officers and detectives continued gathering evidence yesterday as they try to piece together the circumstances of the tragic incident.

Police and paramedics arrived to the Winpara Way home just after 10am on Thursday morning, finding the tiny body with what is believed to have been stab wounds.

A witness told 9News a woman, who identified as the baby’s grandmother, attended the scene shortly after police arrived and removed a toddler from the home.
