More than 1000 homes lose power after driver crashes into Yorke Peninsula power pole in SA

More than 1000 homes have been left without power after an unlicensed driver smashed into a power pole on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula.

The outage hit several towns instantly about 6.45pm on Saturday when an SUV crashed into a Stobie pole at the intersection of Yorke Highway and Spencer Highway in Minlaton.

A Stobie pole is a type of steel-and-concrete power pole commonly used in South Australia.

The 40-year-old driver from Munno Para was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 35-year-old female passenger was uninjured.

Police checks revealed the male driver had never held a driver’s licence, and the car was displaying an incorrect and altered number plate.

“The driver was reported for driving unregistered, uninsured, unlicensed and with unassigned plates and for driving in a careless manner,” SA Police said.

SA Power Networks said 1142 households lost power, including homes in Minlaton, Hardwicke Bay, Bluff Beach, Parsons Beach and Port Rickaby.

Staff had to replace the pole, restoring electricity by about 1am on Sunday.

The driver could face court at a later date, police said.
