They were stuck in Sydney, five hours away where Jonah underwent extensive treatment, while self employed tradie Dave solo parented seven kids in their half renovated house.
During filming, Dave and Desiree received devastating news from Jonah’s doctor that they had found more cancer.
Dave was desperate to spend time with his boy and A Current Affair viewers helped make that happen as donations flooded in.

“It was mind-blowing that people could care about our family so much that don’t even know us,” Desiree said.

“It meant I could be at home and spend that time with him,” Dave said.
Dave and Desiree hoped Jonah would be strong enough to go to his first NRL game.

Jonah’s middle name is Lane in honour of Eel’s forward Shaun Lane and older brother Cayless’ name was inspired by Eels legend Nathan Cayless.
