Australia’s south bracing for icy blast early next week

Australia’s southern coast will experience more cold weather as an Antarctic air mass moves over the area.

Tasmania, Victoria, southern NSW and the ACT will all feel the cold on Monday, as well as strong winds, rain and potentially snowfall in the mountain regions.

Weatherzone said the incoming airmass ”is “stronger, colder, longer-lasting and wetter” than the previous system that brought cold temperatures to the region last weekend.

The cold front will push freezing air northwards, potentially bringing a lot more snow than usual for this time of year.

Light snowfall of about 50cm is expected in Canberra and Tasmania.

The system could also bring at least 10mm of rain to parts of Victoria and South Australia, according to Weatherzone.

While the system could potentially bring the heaviest rainfalls this year in some areas, like parts of Adelaide that have seen just 30.8mm this year.

The system will also bring roaring winds to alpine areas and exposed coastal weather stations in Victoria and Tasmania, which could potentially see gusts up to 100km/h, Weatherzone said.

While NSW will see little rain, it will be exposed to strong winds, which could bring down trees and powerlines.
