Adrian Torrens charged with murder of Central Coast teenager Audrey Griffin, whose body was found in an Erina creek

A man has been charged with murder nearly a month after the body of a teenage girl was found in a creek.

Audrey Griffin, 19, was reported missing after vanishing during a night out with friends on the NSW Central Coast on March 23.

Her body was hours later found submerged in Erina Creek, with police initially not believing her death was suspicious.

But after further investigations, police on Monday afternoon arrested Adrian Torrens, 53, in Surry Hills in Sydney’s inner city.

Authorities will now allege he and Ms Griffin had a “physical altercation” on the night of her death.

The man was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with murder along with eleven unrelated domestic violence matters.

He was refused bail and is set to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court in central Sydney on Tuesday.

Ms Griffin, a student at Sydney’s University of Technology, also worked part time at Crown Plaza Terrigal on the Central Coast.

She competed at this year’s Ironman New Zealand event weeks before her death.

Gosford Water Polo Club shared the news of her death on social media last month in a post that said “it is with great sadness” that they let club members know about Ms Griffin’s “sudden and tragic passing”.

“Audrey participated in a wide variety of sports and always bought a smile to those around her. This tragedy has affected the many people who were fortunate enough to know Audrey,” the club’s post on Facebook said.

“Our thoughts are with Audrey’s family and her extensive network of friends across the Central Coast community.”

The club also shared details about the teenager’s funeral service, which was held at Greenway Chapel & Memorial Gardens on April 11.
