Driver dies on Adelaide’s Port Wakefield Highway after two trucks collide in fiery crash


A 77-year-old driver has died following a fiery two-truck crash in Adelaide’s north.

Emergency services were called to Port Wakefield Highway near Prime Road, just before 7am on Thursday morning, following reports that two trucks had burst into flames upon impact.

It took firefighters took several hours to extinguish the blaze.

The driver of one truck, a man from Port Augusta, died at the scene.

The second driver, a 57-year-old man from Marleston and his 39-year-old passenger from Elizabeth Downs, sustained minor injuries.

Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

Augusta Scrap Metals confirmed one of its trucks was involved in the crash and that one of their drivers had sadly died at the scene.

“This is a devastating time for all of us as we mourn the shock loss of a friend, family man, and experienced driver who has been in the SA transport industry for decades,” they said in a statement.

Major Crash Investigators are attending, with reports of heavy fog in the area at the time of the collision.

Traffic on southbound lanes remain blocked.

Oversized vehicles will need to hold at Port Wakefield or Dublin.

An alternative for southbound traffic from Port Wakefield is via Balaklava, then Mallala and out onto Port Wakefield Highway.

Northbound lanes remain open with speed restrictions in place.

These restrictions are expected to remain in place for some time.
