ASIC appoints new CISO after function review

The corporate regulator has hired former McGrathNicol partner Jamie Norton to take on the CISO role that had previously been held by Jez Clement since December 2021.

The changeover comes just two months after ASIC also farewelled its chief data and analytics officer of almost five years Darshil Mehta, who went to join law firm King & Wood Mallesons (KWM).

Writing on LinkedIn, Norton said he was “thrilled to announce” his appointment to ASIC’s “newly-created chief information security officer role”.

“I’ve been impressed by the high quality of senior leadership at ASIC and the professionalism of the extended cyber team.

“I’m excited to lead the expansion of our corporate cybersecurity capabilities while also contributing to ASIC’s regulatory functions and broader security initiatives.”

ASIC declined to comment about Norton’s appointment.

However, commenting on its recruitment for a CISO back in December, an ASIC spokesperson said it had “reviewed the position and reclassified it as a senior executive leader role”.

“As a result, we must undertake an open, merit-based recruitment process,” ASIC said at the time.

“This decision demonstrates the importance ASIC places on the role of the CISO, especially as we continue in our journey to become a data-driven, digitally enabled regulator.”

ASIC also acknowledged Clement as its CISO back in December.

Immediately prior to joining McGrathNicol in 2021, Norton was CISO for the Australian Taxation Office for three years.

He has also worked for the likes of NEC Australia and security vendor Check Point.
