Adelaide roads to get artificial intelligence cameras to improve traffic

Artificial intelligence cameras will be put on some of the Adelaide’s busiest roads in an Australian-first trial.

The new technology aims to not only improve safety but also cut travel times for motorists.

The state government is rolling out four smart cameras at some of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis called it “a powerful piece of equipment to improve our traffic network”.

They’ll be at Heaslip Road at Penfield, the Paradise Interchange, and two spots along Main South Road at Old Noarlunga.

The $350,000 government trial uses AI cameras to detect congestion so the Traffic Management Centre can adjust signals to improve traffic flow.

“This technology is enabling use to reduce traffic flows and to be more responsive to what’s going on out there in real time,” Artificial Intelligence Assistant Minister Michael Brown said.

The government says traffic congestion costs the economy $33,000 for every 5000 motorists forced to wait in 20 minutes of traffic.

The new technology is set to improve travel time dramatically.

“The traffic management system using artificial intelligence can cost as little as $8,000 at an intersection if the infrastructure is already in place without having to put in new infrastructure.” Koutsantonis said.

“They’ll save of course time and money in terms of infrastructure, time and money in terms of being stuck in traffic, freight getting to where it’s needed to go faster and more efficiently, public transport moving more quickly.”

If the trial proves successful the government will install more cameras around the city’s busy road network.
