The pilot of a light plane that crashed onto a hangar roof at Wedderburn Aerodrome in Sydney’s south-west had a technical issue while attempting landing, officials have confirmed.
The pilot was trying to land at the private landing strip when he encountered a technical issue and needed to “go around” for another attempt at the landing, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said.
It was at that point the light plane clipped the roof of the hangar.
Emergency services treated the pilot, a man in his 70s, for head injuries.
The plane was seen on top of a storage shed with its tail bent.
The pilot was in a stable condition.
Fire and rescue crews were seen using a cherry picker and ladders to get onto the hangar roof.
Wedderburn Aerodrome is a small airstrip in Sydney’s southwest that caters mostly to recreational pilots.
Air safety authorities said they won’t be investigating further.
“As this accident involved a recreational category aircraft, it won’t be investigated by the ATSB,” the transport authority said.
