A man has died after being stabbed when a fight broke out between a group of males near a shopping centre in Melbourne’s south-east.
The Homicide Squad is now probing the fatal incident which unfolded in Lyndhurst on Friday night.
Police had been alerted to the fight in the vicinity of Society Avenue, near the Marriott Waters Shopping Centre, about 8.30pm.
A male was found with “serious injuries consistent with a stabbing” when emergency services arrived at the scene.
Everyone else involved in the fight fled the scene, police said.
The male who was stabbed was rushed to hospital, where he later died. He has not yet been identified.
A crime scene was established in the area, with police pictured at the scene on Saturday morning as investigations into the fatal incident continue.
Lyndhurst resident Abhijeet Singh told the Herald Sun he “saw a group of 10 to 20 young people gathered around a silver sedan” while driving to pick up groceries.
“Within seconds, something had happened and they were running in every direction, all screaming the same word,” he said.
“That’s when I saw two guys running towards the Subway, one of them had a machete in his hand.”
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The Allan government this week announced “Australia’s first-ever machete ban“, with the weapons to be classified as a prohibited item from September 1.
The move was part of a wider crackdown on soaring crime in Victoria, with the government also announcing “the toughest bail laws in Australia”.
